ABOUT US

Uniting Cyprus Through the Game of Backgammon

The Cyprus Backgammon Federation is the official governing body dedicated to promoting and developing the game of backgammon across the island. We aim to unite players of all levels through tournaments, events, and community engagement. With a deep respect for the game’s rich history and a passion for fair play, we work to grow the backgammon community in Cyprus and represent our players on the international stage.

HISTORY

From Local Passion to National Legacy

The Cyprus Backgammon Federation was established in 2023 with the vision of organizing and formalizing backgammon activity across the island. What began as a passionate initiative by a small group of dedicated players has grown into a recognized body that oversees national tournaments, nurtures local talent, and builds international connections. Over the years, the federation has played a key role in reviving interest in the game and ensuring its continued growth within the Cypriot community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Backgammon uses the same type of clocks as chess. The device has two clocks—one for each player—and a button for each side. When it's your turn, your clock starts running. Once you've made your move, you press your button to stop your clock and start your opponent's. Pressing the button also commits your move.

Each match is set up with two time settings: shot time and bank time. At the start of every turn, you get a fresh amount of shot time to make your move. If you use up your shot time, the clock starts counting down from your bank time. If your bank time runs out completely, you lose the game on time.

The doubling cube is a strategic tool in backgammon, used to increase the stakes of a match. It’s a special die marked with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64. A player may offer a double only at the start of their turn, before rolling the dice. The opponent can either accept the double and continue playing for the higher value, or decline and forfeit the game at the current value. Once accepted, the cube passes to the opponent, who then holds the exclusive right to offer the next double.

In match play, the Crawford rule comes into effect when a player reaches one point away from winning the match. During the Crawford game—the next game—the doubling cube cannot be used. After that game, normal doubling resumes.

In backgammon, a player wins 3 points when they win a backgammon. This happens when:

  • The losing player has not borne off any checkers,

  • And still has a checker on the bar or in the winner’s home board when the game ends.

This is the most severe kind of loss in backgammon and scores three times the current value of the doubling cube (or 3 points if no cube is in play).
